There has been a lot of road noise from my wife's 147 since we bought it. After having it checked out for wheel bearings I suspected the culprit was the budget tyres that had been fitted on the front. The rear tyres were advisories on the MOT last week so I decided to change all 4 and replace with Goodyear Eagle F1s. What a difference this has made. You can now hear the raspy TS engine tone over the droning noise from those cheap tyres. £360 well spent!
I'm having the same issues with the 156. Some 'Triangle' brand type things on there. They might as well be actual triangles for as much use as they are. Thankfully the missus drives it more than me, I'll stick with the GT thank you.
Can't wait till they wear out
I thought i had a rear wheel bearing going on my GTV and it turned out it was the rear tyres - the inside edge had worn like a 50p piece. Very strange. I read on a thread on here i think the Good Year Eagle F1's are prone and it's also something to do with the rear susspension on the GTV. I replaced them with more F1's though as i like them.
However......just had two new fronts on my Mondeo Mk 4 and was advised i needed rears as well as they had worn like 50p's! Again i thought it was wheel bearings. Anyway, the fitter said this often happens if you drive the car with the same loading most of the time (i.e. just the driver) - which is exactly what i do. So if anyone has suspected wheel bearings going or droning could be worth checking the inside edge of the rear tyres. It's really pronounced. To avoid it you're supposed to swap front to back at intervals to even the wear.
The old symmetric pattern Eagle F1s (GSD3) were quite bad for it, but to be fair any symmetrical tyre is. The new asymmetric ones don't really go out of shape easy.
My 156 was droning from the rear ... turned out the strut spring pan had collapsed on one side and was rubbing on the tyre!! Couldn't quite work out how a duff wheel bearing could give off a burning rubber smell !!
My CMax has a horrid drones/wheel bearing noise from the rear. Been there since I had a full set of 4 Goodyear Efficient grip performance tyres fitted. A quick Google shows this is common. Nothing wrong with the tyres or the bearings. These tyres don't like this car.
Strangely, good year efficient grip performance tyres on the front of the GTA not a peep.
I fitted a set of used winter tyres to the G, and immediately got the wheel bearing sound. however this has gotten progressively less and is completely gone now, after about 10 days. Besides that the tyres are still noisier than the P7 summers. fuel consumption has gone up aswell and the car feels like the tyres are overinflated, which they aren't. the last is definitely due to the winters being runflats though.
Another one here. Just had the cheap chinese tyres removed and the car feels so much more like a quality vehicle. Road noise has halved, The ride is so much less harsh and crashy which was making the car feel much less like the quality it is. GY Eagle F1 AS2's in case you wanted to know.
A real transformation, its now smooth and quite over the bumps / mway joints.
