I've had my local garage have a look at tracing the problem. They have said that it's the sensor behind the sterring wheel, which they have referred to as a "clock spring". Is that accurate description?
They have told me that in order to fix the problem, they have to replace the entire bit behind the steering wheel; which includes the indicator and wiper stalks. The part costs £175! Needless to say, I didn't get it replaced and will try some of the solutions above.
