On getting in our 147 I often wonder why the clutch pedal has such a long travel. It seems only to disengage practically on the floor. Maybe it's just me. The garage may prove right but I reckon they're guessing a bit. I don't think you can reliably judge the wear of the plate by the feel of the pedal, except if it's already done for. When it's really well worn it'll slip under load e.g going up a hill. A reasonbly good (aware) driver should be able to go for some way with a clutch that's on the way out. A poor one will get left on the roadside. Any signs of slipping you need to back off or drop down a gear immediately. What is slipping?? Normally the engine only increases speed at the same rate as the car, if the engine speed seems to change with throttle opening while the car is doing a steady speed the clutch is slipping. (It might sound a bit like an automatic).
