Very gutless 156 Selespeed, worse than 1.2 clio!

My 1999 156 Sele has been a bit poorly since last summer, it doesn't fail, it doesn't do anything bad really. On a warmish to warm day when you first start her, she is a bit gutless. Its like a hesitation, similar to an old carb engine running extremely rich when cold. AT 3000 rpm it pulls its socks up and goes well.

The ultimate insult however came today when a friend who owns a 1.2 base model Clio drove it and commented that it was gutless and slow! In all honesty after a chat, my friend said that the flat spot below 3000 rpm was impossible to drive around due to the transmission and if felt awful. I had a go in the clio and it was MUCH more responsive and powerful.

Where can I take my car to be fully diagnosed. I have replaced MAF, temp sensor, sir filter element, oil, filter, all 8 plugs at times over the last year, non-has helped the matter!

I'm looking for a garage in East Anglia where I can be sure of fair service and reasonable pricing.

Any ideas gladly received!

sorry to hear your troubles - I live in Braintree, Essex and I can rec. my local indie - they're a small family company but seem to know their stuff. They rebuilt my engine after a cam belt snap & they service my alfa & my wife's citroen - do a good job at a reasonable price. Let me know if you want more details.

Its needs to go on a diagnosis machine or examiner with someone who knows what they are doing. Could be anything from an incorrectly timed cambelt to a software upgrade. These engines are not renowned for lacking power so something is up somewhere.

Which bit of East Anglia.. there's a specialist in Ipswich & Alfashop in Norwich..any good??

Would this be affected by the cam variator??

How many miles does she have and have you done the cambelt anyway?

i think the variator is moreso higher revs... dont think it would affect the low end grunt so much.

does the 156 sele have the same inlet manifold system as the 147 sele, the two stage manifold... it could be a (very small) possibility that for whatever reason the manifold has jammed in the high rev position? just something to consider although i have never heard of it happening before

The cam belt is only 10000 miles old, the variator works as you get a bit bootful of power at 3000rpm exactly where the variator kicks in. I'm in Peterborough so Norwich is a long way, but do-able.
