Exhaust rear silencer

Ok, silly question time.... I've had to replace the rear silencer on my 156 SW. It came from Autolusso as a used part and was a bit of a bargain I think. Anyhow, I can't get the joint to the intermediate pipe to seal despite liberal use of firegum. I used a 63mm U-shape clamp from Halfords having measured the outer diameter of the pipe as 60mm-ish., thinking this would pull the joint up tightly. It was a bit distorted and needed rounding out to get it to fit. Is it too big of a clamp, if so what size? The next one down seems to be 57mm. I don't want to distort or split the pipe by crushing it.

I did say silly question....
