Hello there. Reading through past threads, this seems to be very, very common but with many different potential causes. I’m brand new here, having bought a very cheap 2002 156 JTS Veloce on Saturday. It has a few problems, but the main worry is the engine control system light that flashes at me every now and again. I’m hoping you can help me decide whether it’s worth trying to fix, or whether I should give up and move on to another car ASAP …
The engine runs rough and lumpy (or sounds it to me – I’ve no Alfa experience) and there are occasional flat spots in acceleration under load.
I’ve had the codes read and all that’s coming up is a misfire on cylinder three. Unfortunately, the coil bolt is seized in place, so that’s as far as investigations have gone for now.
So … what are my likely options, if I want to clear this up? Does it sound simple/obvious to those of you with more experience?
I need to decide two things:
- Will the car get me home after Christmas (I have a 100+ mile drive over the mountains to do)?
- Will it be financially sensible to have work done or should I cut my losses and sell the car on as-is? (I’m no mechanic and have no garage, so won’t be working on it myself.)
The other issues with the car are less serious. There’s play at the front end, so it either needs wishbones, upper links, or new bushes. It needs a service – the dash display is telling me one is overdue. The electric window controls on the right-hand side of the car don’t work. And, erm … that’s about it. The bodywork and interior are lovely.
Apologies for almost certainly repeating old queries, but I’d appreciate some advice. Ta.
