Cooling Fan Dilema

I'm so close to making my 156 a good car I can smell it! Anyway, onto my last defect:
The cooling fan never comes on, ever, no matter what the temperature. So far I've dome the following:
1. Removed the 30 A relay at the OS front of the car and bridged all the connections, the fan came on all the time but the brdgeing wires got hot.
2. replaced said relay
3. Checked all associated wiring, all seems sound
4. removed the 2 wires at 1 o'clock (as you look at the front of the car) and tried bridgeing that, the fan never came on.

Any ideas, please remember I'm a Chef, make cakes for a living, so try to be as gentle (an unmechanical) in your description, as possible!

Many thanks!

Re: Cooling Fan Dilema

Bridging the control terminals (for want of the professional term) i.e. the ones from the engine ECU is making a path to earth which is in effect a short where once there was a resistance (i.e. the relay coil) so it might not be the best thing for the ECU. Shorting the terminals that switch the fan itself shouldn't be a problem because the load is still there (the fan). But I expect the bridging got hot mainly due to the high current drawn by the fan motor.
