I've found the ability to open close the window with the key very useful in tight parking spaces, as with all two door cars the doors are too long to fully open in restricted space - dropping the window allows you to "snake" around the door to get in or out. Totally pointless though when the close function became deleted from later models. It is also nice to be able to drop your windows a couple of inches from the office window on a hot day half an hour before home time.
IMO a lot of problems with the GT's windows are caused by the connections inside the connector plug to the window control module in the door. One of these pins is permanently live - it has to be so the remote can work on the windows but also so that the little drop and close with the door opening/closing can operate. Inside mine a problem of corrosion occurred in what I supposed was the earth retun in that socket thus generating random failures to operate of the motor which got progressively worse. This took ages and loads of experimentation to track down - but since fettling the problems have gone - and I'll know where to look first if I get trouble again.
I'm not suggesting that this is cause of the o.p.'s issue - I can't imagine how loss of earth would cause the windows to drop I'd expect that to be a key or a control module fault - but it is an Alfa after all. I report this for anybody searching the forum for GT window faults as something to check out before buying new regulators, switches and/or control modules.
