Knocking 156!!!

I have a 156 on an 02 plate which has developed a 'knocking' noise occasionally at the front end, seems to come from the front wheel. The dealer recommended replacing the roll bar and bushes but a mate reckons it could just be the drop links. Anyone experienced this?
I'd be really grateful for any advice if any of you have experienced anything similar?

Me too! Check your nuts! I've only owned my car a month and bought myself a nice new shiney set of alloys only to find the wheel nuts had come loose after a few days.

Re: Knocking 156!!!

Had same problem with my 147. Had the droplinks and anitroll bar changed. Turned out to be loose brake pads. A caliper maintenance kit applied to both front wheels solved the problem. Do a simple test - find the spot in the road where you know it knocks and apply the brakes slightly the next time you go over it - if it doesn't knock then suspect loose brake pads.

Re: Knocking 156!!!

aaahhhhhhhhhh glad i found this thread, we have a similar problem on our 156 ( its not the wheels coming off ) we have been told it is the roll bar bushes ( which is a gearbox out job apparently ) but i had the feeling it may just be a pad sliding in the caliper, i shall go off and check the pads before any expensive roll bar antics. thanks guys.

ps does anyone know if it is possible to change the roll bar bushes without removing the gearbox ?

Re: Knocking 156!!!

Drop-links do fail and do make a knocking noise.
ALWAYS replace the drop-link before the anti-roll bar! One is about £30 and half an hours work, the other is a sub-frame off job and is about 5 hours labour plus parts and you would still be advised to have new drop-links too.
You lose nothing but half an hours labour to change the link first.

Re: Knocking 156!!!

Changing the anti roll bar is a mahoosive job on a 156. The drop links are relatively easy albeit tricky. The drop links are definately the ones to eliminate first. To do the links yourself is not a particularly difficult job. If you have ever done brake pads and the like, can use axle stands, have a 17mm spanner then go for it. Please not in the street though

Re: Knocking 156!!!

Had the same problem recently on my 03 156. Drop links are an easy inspection. My tip for anti-roll bar inspection is to open the driver or passenger door (get some extra help for this) and rock the car as much as you can. If you get a knocking noise while doing this its your anti-roll bar bushes. Worked for me anyway. Job set me back 320 incl parts and labour.
