GT Driveshafts - Testing/Replace what/Replacements/How to guide
I have been a long time lurker on here waiting to eventually break the BMW & Company Car ownership to enjoy driving something with a little bit more soul. Finally the day came and I picked up a cheap but tidy 2005 GT JTD. I'll put up a thread about the car shortly but I initially need some assurance/explanation on the common driveshaft issues! I bought the car knowing it had a judder/vibration when under throttle at 40/50mph upwards and from reading on here suspected worn driveshafts and so took a gamble.
First post is a big post, questions below!
Whats the best way to confirm if the juddering is the driveshafts/tripod bearing/cup? Just feel for side to side/up and down play?
I gather that the nearside (the shortest shaft?) is the most common to fail is this correct?
From reading on here I see that the cup is very expensive but if the tripod bearing is worn I would want to change the cup too to ensure the joint has some longevity, with this in mind do people often just change the whole shaft to save/limit expense?
From just a quick look online I see eurocarparts are doing q-drive shafts cheap but J&R Birmingham are also really really cheap. I also have seen driveshaftuk.com can do refurbed items for a reasonable rate. I need more than 30k out of new shafts, what do people make of the quality of the:
J&R Birmingham Shafts
Driveshaft UK refurbs
can anyone recommend any other good value/quality alternatives?
Finally, I have changed shafts before and seen on here some recommended dismantling/refitting advice but is there a known "How to guide" floating around anywhere?
Thanks in advance, hopefully this thread might help to put alot of driveshaft information in one place.
Need an Alfa! Cheap, cheap! Pref something older that needs a little work!
