loudish knocking noise 2.0TS selespeed
Sorry my first post has to be about my Alfa breaking down, but just wondering if anyone out there could give some advice..
I drive a 2000 156 Sportwagon 2.0TS selespeed. Today i was on a nice open road with sweet bends and no traffic, so i thought lets give the girl a run. I was in 5th going 45mph and down-shifted to 3rd and hit the loud pedal. I hit the red line and upshifted to 4th but then the car started to make a loudish knocking noise, so i eased off and hit 5th again which seemed to make the noise quieter. However, when i reached the next junction the car stalled and the selespeed warning light came on? so i turned off the engine and restarted it. For the first few attempts it would not hold at idle speed and cut out. But it did eventually start, i drove for maybe half a mile and pulled over where it was safe to open the bonnet. At first i thought maybe its a gearbox problem, but when i started it up and listened with the bonnet up, it seemed to be definately coming from the engine. As i was only a mile or so from home, i thought best to get it home. While driving, the noise seemed to be much worse in lower gears (gear changes were still ok, with no strange noises) and there was still plenty of power.
Now when i turn the engine on it sounds like a Massy Ferguson with a hangover and the Selespeed warning light is on. Any Ideas???
Car has 75k with full Alfa history and 2 cambelt changes, the last one at 71k.
Owning an Alfa is a lot like having a problem child, it may cause you lots of grief and heartache, but you still love it all the same
