I drove my 2.4 diesel 156 20 valve multijet through a deep puddle and now when the cooling fan comes on it make a metallic noise - any ideas?

Unplug it till you clean the electrics, there may have been corrosion in the motor brushes or some crap has got in there. Take it off the car and have a closer look, perhaps power it up off the battery after you sort it!! sounds like the carbon brushes have fell apart and its on the brush pressure springs?
