Hmmm my new 156

hi guts i am a proud owner of a 156 sportwaggon 2.5 q-system
its done 85,000 and there are a few problems id like your advice on.

1 - the fuel guage light doesnt work i cant see how much fuel i have at night.
2 - rear wipe does not work
3 - every so often the speedo drops to zero and back again (sometimes not all the way) and at night i haver noticed that the headlights dim slightly when it happens. only lasts a second and i cant here any change in engine note - cutting out etc.
4 - i have noticed that the engine warning light is on slightly - only enough to ve visible at night - handbook states that i may have an emissions problem. lambda sensor? would this cause the previous problem?

i wondered if these were common faults and also where should i take it if it does need looking at - i live in london.

loving the car though. really nice to drive

Re: my new 156

As for point 4, I doubt it. It sounds more like you have an electrical problem. Crossed wire somewhere is causing your engine light to slightly glow maybe. If you had an engine problem you'd like have poor fuel economy, rough idling and other cranky behaviour, also maybe loss of power etc etc...

I'd start by checking all your fuses if you haven't already, after that - I'm beat!

I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me will come along shortly

Welcome to AO!

Re: my new 156

Can only 'shine a light' (sorry!) on Point 1, my light does the same, especially when it's cold, it's a simple fix, just smack the top of the dashboard above the fuel gauge and it's jolts it back on, works for me every time

Don't clobber with with a hammer though , may leave a scratch....

Point 3. I had a similar problem with my last car, a Saab 900. Turned out to be a fault with the pcb for the instrument panel, this had to be replaced.

Re: my new 156

Hello and welcome,

problems 3 and 4
At first find some sand paper and rub both of the contacts on the battery and cables.
If doesnt help go to electrician and you may probablly have the problem with your aletrnator - which at some point doesnt make enough power,
This is quite common problem an any car not yust Your's

problem 2 maybe everything , or maybe the motor of the wiper just stuck, when did you use it last time, or did not for how long ?

problem 1 probably just the blub ... bang it if it works after bad contact - or oxidation if doesnt replace blub
