Another Judder!!

I know its been done to death but my prob seems a wee bit different. When i first got the car (156 v6) the clutch pedal seemed to have like 2 definite feels ,soft to 3/4 way down and then heavier for the remaining travel. got into the car the other day pressed the pedal and it felt for all the world like a cable had snapped , now I know its hydraulic but the pedal feels softer , it still selects gears ok but on the downshift there is a definite judder. The car has done 40,000 miles please tell me it doesnt need a clutch yet, if it is the slave cylinder where is it located as I stand at the front of the car looking at the engine. Thanks again lads. Peter
