don't try and ''guess'' ignition timing as bent valves are costly to repair...
cam locks will make sure you are at TDC and ensure your timing is as it should be.
i'm not sure if there is a haynes manual available but recently I did headgasket repairs on 2 BMW Z3's we actually borrowed cam clamps for the first one but then we made clamps out of a piece of hardwood for the second car the dimensions for the clamp where given in the manual.
both worked a treat, there is also a hole in the flywheel on the BMW engines which allows you to lock it in position at TDC this makes sure you are not 180 out, there is a pin in the BMW kit but we found a drill bit worked just as well.
