Struggles to start using fuel?

My car has had the infamous glow plug error for a while now but always started first time. It's beginning to struggle a little with the colder weather though upon startup and I'm wondering - does it use quite a bit of fuel to get the engine going when it spends a while turning over? My fuel gauge seems to get visibly lower in-between turning the engine off when I get to work and starting it back up again when I leave. I was thinking maybe the engine dumps a load of fuel in to try and get the thing started.

not enough to notice on a fuel gauge.

If your battery is fine, probably time to change the glow plugs. I did mine last week and it starts like a new car now.
