Stalling at high revs/gear change

Today I test drove an Alfa 156 JTD Veloce Diesel.

I got the revs up (and I cant remember but I might have changed gear) but then the engine stalled. I turned it off and on again and it was OK.

The dealer said I made a bad gear change because I wasn't used to the car, which is possible. Is the car likely to stall in that situation? Or is this actually the sign that the car is has engine trouble and I should avoid buying it?

Any thoughts would be appreciated, I have not driven an Alfa before.

might just need a new fuel filter. the engine will cut out if the desired fuel pressure can't be reached as there could be a fuel leak and thus fire hazard. this will happen under load and at higher revs first.
