Where did you get it diagnosed? Reason I ask is I broke down a few years ago now in my spider she had been feeling sluggish and just conked out and just wouldnt start up again and the aa chap said it was probably the cambelt had snapped as this is common in alfas, I new nothing about alfas then still don't know a lot now but they look nice, dad had a look and turned out to be a failed rocket cover and oil had filling the plug wells.
My new to me 156 about nine months ago was running ruff local garage said £900 for new engine but weren't interred in having a proper look. Took it to a kind chap on forum who connect it up to his computer and found the fault straight away.
Could it be as simple as coil lead, plug, injector wire. My 1.9 jtd was running rough and this turned out to be running on 3 cylinders, further investigation by tom off the forum show injector 3 fault. New wiring at the cost of £15 replaced my self with the help and guidance off the kind alfa forum foke as I hadn't done anything like that before and back running on four cylinders.
Take it to a independent alfa specialist and go from there. Sounds like a nice car worth saving.
