Selespeed dropping out of gear into neutral and not shifting up
I have an Alfa Romeo 147 selespeed 2000 model. I have not had any problems with it until recently.
The problems started when I hit a pothole with my left front wheel a few months ago. The car dropped into Neutral and I could not get it into gear. I got the assistance of a friend who towed me home, about 5km away. As soon as I got there, the car started responding and I could select gears. The problem seemed to have disappeared l, but this was only for a few weeks.
The car would drive off fine but would not change into Gear number 2, and if i came to a halt it would drop into neutral and not get into gear again.. I called a local mechanic (not an alfa specialist as they are not available in Zimbabwe) and he suspected it was the gearbox, so he drained all the gear oil and refilled it.. He also noticed that there was no ATF fluid in the reservoir and refilled this (whilst bleeding the ATF from the screw found under tge battery tray).. Once again the car started driving well for a few days and the problems came back again..
It would not shift into 2nd gear and as soon as i stopped the car would drop into Neutral and fail to get into gear again.. The ATF fluid would overflow from the reservoir and there was no sound coming from the pump (the one under the fender on the front left hand side) on opening the door or even when the car was running.. I later found that the solution to this problem was to bleed out all the ATF from the screw under the battery tray and refill it at the reservoir. The pump would start priming and all would be well for a few days. There were no warning lights on the dashboard except for an ABS light.
I called the diagnostics guys and they found that there was a short circuit in the wiring and they rewired the car and ran the diagnosis again and everything was clear. I also bought a second hand pump and replaced the one on the car. I refilled the ATF and the car started running smoothly with no warning lights.
This morning however I realised that the old problems are back, the car would not shift up from 1st gear, dropped into Neutal and will not get into gear.. The ATF reservoir is overflowing and there is no sound of priming when i open the drivers door...
Please help me with ideas, am really stuck
