Help required about grinding sound in engine bay and loss of lights
I need some advice about my car, which is a 2005 Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 JTS Sportwagon with a manual gearbox. A week ago the car started to make a horrible grinding sound while I was driving it. At the same time all the lights on the vehicle just turn off. I had it towed home. At home I noticed that the car would automatically start cranking as soon as the key reached I position without reaching the start position so I assumed this would be an ignition switch. I ordered a new one and fitted one. I also checked the ECU for diagnostic fault codes, which there weren't any. After the new part was fitted, the vehicle would let me to turn the key all the way to start position, control lights would come on as normal. Once it was fired up, the car would sit at idle with no problems whatsoever, however, as soon as it gets revved, the grinding noise returns. The grinding noise stops and starts at the most random moments, however, it always kills the lights as soon as it starts. Any ideas what could I check? The noise sounds like a sticky starter but it comes and goes randomly.
