Help - Sudden lack of power!
Travelling at motorway speeds this afternoon when I suddenly detect a engine tone change, turn the radio off and realise that I was losing power and still revving heavily because my foot was still on the accelerator. The engine sounded lit it was having a fit.
Travelling at 70 in 5th was making a right racket. I also noticed the temp gauge had risen above it's usually static 90deg mark.
Slowing down improved and the engine sounded less strained but each gear appeared to have a limit to the revs it would happily reach (3000 in 3rd, 4000 or so in 4th etc) before it peaked and didn't want to go any higher.
I cruised at 60 for 2 miles until the next exit and the temp gauge returned quickly to 90. When I stopped, revving the engine while static sounded OK and as a non-mechanically minded car owner nothing obvious shouted at me from under the bonnet.
After 5 mins, I carried on home (20 miles via A and B roads rather than on the motorway). This took the best part of an hour.
The result is that no I have no power over about 3000 revs. Pulling away at roundabouts is a challenge and overtaking an impossibility.
Searching the forum i've seen similar stories and suggestions of fuel filter problems, needing the change the MAF etc but thought my specific details might catch someone's eye.
What bothers me most is that it was a sudden change rather than a progressive worsening.
Any clues? Plan to give my local Indie a call on Monday but in the meantime I'm not driving and could do with some suggestions!
60% of the time it works everytime.
