156 2.4 20 valve

Low compression ?

OK so I bought my 156 2.4 20v as possibly needing an engine as it possibly had low compression, well I first it started up straight away and ran for a second or two then died but had no nasty noises. Today I changed the fuel filter and it started up straight away but obviously missing and wouldn't rev, no nasty noises and a bit of white smoke so some symptoms of low compression but not the starting up so easily. I don't have a compression tester and don't want to spend too much on it if I have to change the engine anyway. Any idea's please.

Sounds more like a fuel problem but you are just guessing until you do some tests. It's say that's it's very unlikely to be a compression problem (unless it's valve timing related) based on what I've read about these engines.
