Opinions please - inner CV joint cup - JTD/Mjet etc

Hi all, this is for my Giulietta but the type of CV joint is the same as is used on the Diesel variants of the 147/156/GT. I have asked on the Giulietta section but as this is a comparativly new model, there aren't as many technical folk on there.

Attached are pictures of my inner CV joint broken down into the seperate components, the cup and the spider joint.

The spider joint has since been replaced but there is still movement in the joint and i am still getting a "Thump" in the drivetrain when changing gear or lifting off suddenly.

Would appreiciate it if anyone could please confirm my suspision that the cup is also worn beyond use and should be replaced.

Its hard to be certain from the pics but it does look like there is a worn area. Can you "feel" the wear inside the cup with a fingernail? If so, then replacement would be advisable. However, this type of joint seems to have a relatively large amount of movement even when in good condition. Could the "thump" be an engine/gearbox mount?

the cup is often the part that fails as it gets "stretched" with wear. my recommendation is to get a new cup before it shags the new spider.

if the cup is worn, the new joint will fail rapidly

disappointing that G diesels are still using this joint, i really would have thought they had moved on from stuff like this now
