Outside temperature sensor gone mad

Dear Alfista, I need your help please. The outside temperature sensor on my 156 stopped working today (shows 50 degrees celsius when it's actually more like 7) with the result that climate control won't heat up my car. I understand the sensor is in the mirror but the manual cleary states to stay away from it. Should I open it up (looks like there's a small flap on the bottom side of the mirror), give it a shake, disconnect the battery, or else ??? Don't really want to take it to the garage for that so all advice welcome. Many thanks!

Lots of info here:

Replacement is easy and you don`t need a garage to do it.
