Re: Alfa specialist near Sutton, London?
£400 for a cambelt change on a v6??
I'd like to know where you're getting that done - N.B while changing the cambelt, you should also change the waterpump (to one with a metal impeller - from the gtv), spark plugs (it's the only time you can get to all of them), and the tensioners. I can't recommend this enough
Total cost will be around £700-£800 - some dealers will happily charge over £1K!!
If you're not sure, don't buy it - there are usually plenty v6's knocking about for sale. Ideally, you should try and buy one that's had all of the above done (higher mileage perhaps), and from an owner that 'an alfista'.
Other things on the checklist:
MAF - does it rev above 4k without any hesitancy when driving?
Radiator - does it look corroded?
Front wishbones - is there a 'clonking' feeling when going over bumps?
These are all common faults on the V6
Don't let me put you off - these are truly great cars, and don't worry about going for one with a higher mileage (as long as all of the above have been done) the engines go on forever.
