Newbie in need :)

Hi all I have recently just purchased my first alfa 156jts veloce selespeed. Its a 2002 model, and wow what an impressive motor. But unfortunately I have a couple of problems I could use help with. 1st I was on the mway doing about 65 and the orange engine light came on with motor control system fail and has stayed on ever since, the car drives and still pulls like a train, but idleing the revs feel to low and also in low revs through the gears feel like it will cut out. 2nd the wipers dont work unless you aggressively waggle the arm and all you get is the fastest speed, I have a rain sensor but the auto function is not working either, any info would be great guys thank you.

Wiper could be an issue with the motor, they have separate tracks for different speeds and they're known for corroding. If you need a replacement, make sure you check your existing motor and see if it is a 5-pin or 6-pin unit. Could also be an issue with the auto-wiper control unit, which when faulty can effect wiper function in general. This is under the scuttle panel on the passenger side, and is prone for getting wet which doesn't do it the whole world of good!

As for your engine light, needs plugging in and codes reading. Could be a number of things, the JTS can be a tricky beast to diagnose if you're not used to working on them. What's the mileage? Anything over 80k I'd say its worth pulling the fuel injectors and having them checked/refurbished. Problem with this is that it is a long job, they are under the inlet manifold at the back of the engine.

Yeah, you deffo need to have it tested and see what errors you're getting and what values it reads for the lambda sensors, MAF, pressure etc. Also check the ignition coils and spark plugs and the throttle valve for carbon deposits.
Hope it helps, best of luck.
