Here's my latest on the stalk issue, should anyone have any comments I'd appreciate it.
I gave the car to my local auto electrician dude, I know him well, and he's pretty good. Also my brother owns a garage and is a mechanic with a lot of experience. However I have no experience, I'm a network engineer!
Anyway, auto electrician dude checked all fuses, relays and the pumps, all ok. He took a look at the steering column stalks and agreed that the problem is probably the stalk.
When he called me up he said the car is now giving a VDC Error on starting, and sometimes ABS error too. I took the car up to my bro, and we plugged a Snap On solus pro thing into the car to get codes etc. It showed a Steering Angle Sensor error code U1712. We rigged up the test whereby you can drive the car and get 4 graphs based on what the wheels are doing (I'm sure there's a proper description for this, I don't know what it is though). The graphs stayed static even though I took the car for a drive with the device plugged in. Then the device errored. Not sure if it's the device at fault or the car.
Auto electric dude said that after searching around on t'interweb that there is a problem where the cables to the steering angle sensor can be damaged if the steering wheel is adjusted horizontally (ie for pulled out forwards) and they can be easily damaged, is this a known problem that could be the root cause?
Anyway, I took the cowling off the steering column to take a look. Nothing seemed out of place, all wiring clips seemed ok.
After reading up on here about the VDC errors, and the steering angle sensor error code I have decided to buy a replacement column with stalks from Autolusso, and will get auto electrical dude to replace the thing next week.
A couple of questions on this:
1, Is replacing the stalks a big job? I mean, steering sensor alignment & airbags, is it a bstard to do? Any tips or how-to's would be appreciated, regarding clock spring & sensors etc.
2, With these errors, is it ok to drive the car to work?
Any comments or help on this would be really appreciated, so if you have had this before, or done something similar before, I'd love to hear about it.
Last thing, this forum is awesome, I've found so much help since having the car (only a month!) through searching previous posts and general browsing, makes owning an alfa with problems much easier!
