As Mirlock alludes to - you can turn off passenger side airbag to prevent projectile babies - this will give you an amber light.
if you've got a red light you'll have an airbag issue to contend with.
You can can use diagnostic software and either a modified KKL cable or an ELM cable to connect to airbag and read faults to actually tell you what it thinks the problem is.
you will need to reset any fault codes stored, as these wont clear themselves anyway.
As said certainly fixing the broken wires is good practice and will prevent further incidents later down the line but I'd start by reading the codes to understand what your problem truly is.
