Strange sound trying to start car

Hi all, weird one here, sometimes, getting more regular now. When I start the engine, whirring sound, engine does not turn over, sounds like, starter motor is spinning and not engaging flywheel, could it be the solenoid ?. Starting this morning, engine turned over and cut out with whirring sound, wait few seconds and she starts !, very confusing.

could be loose connections, loose bolt not holding starter to engine(X3), loose battery, semi siezed starter gear(fix asap or it will destroy itself!), low voltage to solenoid from faulty ignition switch, dodgy earth, starter solenoid windings braking down, corroded/pittted starter solenoid internal contacts, solenoid diode braking down. Take it out and do a bench test? Buy a new starter? Take it to a stealer? Do a few checks, if its easy to remove, bench test, or buy one ready to fit after you have eliminated external reasons for your symptons then remove and inspect? Its a starter motor, like other cars have, I don't think Alfa's suffer with any special unique faults with those. They can be sods to get to though and use ribe drive bolts alot of the time!!

The 'cut out with whirring' suggests that the overrun clutch is failing, and allowing the motor to spin without turning the engine. Do you hear the 'clunk' of the solenoid meshing the gears before the whirring? If so its probably the clutch. If not it may be that the feed to the solenoid is becoming intermittent/poor, combined with an engagement mechanism which needs cleaning and greasing.
