Good mechanical help there Bodger. As you know, had my Thema 16V about 14 yrs or so, did a few cambelt, balancer belt, idler and tensioner replacements over that period of ownership.
Never used cam locking tools, didn't even need to take the camshaft covers off. Only real struggle involved locking the flywheel to undo the left hand threaded bolt that secured the crankshaft pulley, made a tool to suit. Also made a gear locking device to enable one of the idler gears to have its bearing replaced. Torqued at approx 80 ft lbs.
Didn't have a cam variator,so no problems there of course, and never replaced the water pump/impeller, in 72,000 mls.Naturally makes me a bit puzzled, 'miffed' when I read the attention, concern, needed for the 147 16V arrangement.
Although some folks did suffer the occasional belt failure, I personally didn't. Interestingly enough, the locking tool is redundant for the present, but the rear brake piston retraction tool I constructed fits the 147, so a bit of a bonus there. It's a little different from the one you illustrated, as I made it so that it is braced, thread adjustable, against the outer part of the caliper, so puts pressure on the piston as well as enabling the screw effect, to engage the slots and retract the piston, at the same time. If I ever get around to being able to do it, I'll take a snap of it to post up, just as an illustration, as no amount of describing, is sufficient.
Still too chilly to venture out and try the dent puller, but hope to shortly. Was trying to think on the last metallic colour I sprayed, after your recent post. Remembered it was Platino, on the Lancia, flat and lacquer. Spent ages, amateurishly tinting it with various colours, finally got it pretty close to the original, used to enjoy playing around with paint mixing, writing down as I went along, and then doing test areas with an airbrush, before loading the Barracuda for the real job.
Apologies for this boringly long post, It'll give some, who shall remain nameless, something to savage! (Joke.) PS, no spell checker, so allowances please.
