Intermittent clutch pedal pressure problem
Having a strange clutch problem and wondering if anyone has any advice or has the same experience with their 156 (2.4 JTD multijet).
After working without any issues, I suddenly lost pressure in the clutch pedal on the motorway the other day, whilst cruising between 70 – 80 mph. The pedal went completely to the floor and did not come back up, so it was not possible to pump the pedal. However, it was possible to raise it back up without any significant resistance with my foot. I pulled over on to the hard shoulder and called the RAC.
Whilst waiting for the RAC, after about 10 – 15 minutes I noticed that pressure had returned to the pedal and it appeared to be working properly again. I then drove on cautiously and all was normal for about half an hour. Then, as I approached a roundabout, the pressure in the clutch pedal had gone again. I stopped again and the same thing happened; the pressure returned after about 15 minutes. I checked the brake/clutch fluid reservoir level and the level was still at max.
I then gave up on my journey and returned home but kept my speed between 50 – 60mph and, oddly, had no further problems with the pedal all the way back.
Anyone have any idea what the cause of this intermittent fault could be? My only thought was that something may be overheating at higher speed but I still can’t reconcile the idea with why the system otherwise works normally and there’s no fluid loss.
The only related work done on the car recently was that I topped up the gearbox oil at the weekend (although when I test drove it after the top up I didn’t encounter this problem).
