Re: 156 2.0 TS burning oil too fast?? 1 litre/500miles sound too much?
Let's not fool ourselves here. Despite what Alfa Romeo may state as being still 'normal', 1 ltr per 1000km is too much, and 1 ltr per 500 miles certainly is. I love the brand, but if Alfa is serious about competing with their German competitors this will not help them. I have owned a 2001 156 Selespeed since a year now and it typically consumes 1 ltr in 1400 km. Luckily I bought it (in Switzerland) with warranty, and after having tried swapping the oil for a different brand and grade (to Castrol 5/W40) and no real changes, they've done some serious research. They now agreed to 'refurbish' the pistons and camshaft under warranty, so I'm a happy man, but Alfa's advice didn't necessarily help my case. Lesson learned: don't buy a used car without a warranty, whatever the brand.
