Sorted At Last !!
Finally got the broken hinge sorted on my GT. Drove over to breakers (Silverlake,Botley) and checked out older models of alfa 147s. They seemed to have the same door handle as the GT so was hoping they would have the same flat hinge.
One of the 147s had the interior door panel removed and because the window is higher in the 147 it was easy to access the screw holding the hinge to the door. They wanted £6 for the entire handle so i asked if I could rip the handle away without damaging the door. The guy did it for me and it came away easily. I then unscrewed the hinge from the remaining half of handle and voila!! the same hinge, RESULT!
I am a little more than hopeless with cars but I managed to get interior panel off easily enough but fitting hinge was another matter as window was in the way. Took it to garage where the mechanic and his mate replaced the broken hinge whilst the handle was attached the other end. He used long reaching magnetic tools and although tricky (me, no chance) he did it in about 15-20 mins, going in from under the window and the side.
I was extremely happy and gave him £30 in his hand. I see £36 all in as a great result for this as the job was too much for me. I put the panel back on and all good, hope this helps.
Just a quick note, side light bulb went and after reading on forums what a nightmare to replace they are I took motor to Halfords, £6 for bulb, £4 to fit. Took the guy all of 2 minutes so if you dont fancy getting your hands dirty give 'em a go,
all the best EEZEE
