2004 Alfa 156 2.4 JTD boost problem
Hi all. Bought my first Alfa this week. Not really sure yet what model it is. I believe it's a 150bhp 10V based on how fast it is.
I've no pics yet as it need a good spit and polish on the outside.
Bought it for £700 knowing it needed work done. I've since replaced the thermostat, and discs and pads all round. I bought it off my mechanic friend whom was aware of the issues mentioned here, he just didn't have time to sort the problems out and I fell in lve with it after first drive.
I've no Idea if it has been remapped, but it's unbelievably fast. I've been assured it's stock by the guy I bought it off as he said the previous owner was an older guy, though he didn't buy it till 2008 and there seems little evidence of receipts before that.
Intermittent loss of turbo at low revs, then returns fiercely at around 3000rpm. Fuel economy is terrible at an average of 30mpg. I know it can do better and I've been driving like Miss Daisy and I live in a rural town surrounded by 60mph roads. I've not noticed any smoke other than usual grey.
The air filter housing lid wasn't seated properly, but I've seen to that, however, maybe it's not tight enough? seems a very tight fit! Brakes aren't binding at all. I'm about to go out and try to tighten the air box further, and check as many pipes/hoses as I can find. MAF sensor has been removed and cleaned.
For all intents and purpose, the car dives amazingly well, but poor Avg Fuel and intermittent loss of turbo at low revs. Maybe it happens more at correct temp? I'll need to check this today.
Today i bought a nearly new MAF sensor, but the part number ends in 019 instead of 309 as in the one I took off. I've read these are the same part, just different numbers relating to other makes, namely Saab or Vauxhall?? I simply replaced the sensor, not the entire housing.
My problem is now limited revs above 3000!!!!!!
It is definitly different now. No F1 style pulling away in 1st. Yesterday I remarked how it could do 30 in 5th @ 1000rpm. Today It won't do it and is at 2000rpm @ 60mph. Boost was immediate before swap, but now not till around 2000rpm.
I can only assume it was over boosting?
I apologise for starting a new thread as there is a multitude of this kind of stuff on the web, but seeing as it's later in the decade, maybe we can narrow down the causes.
Just to reiterate, EGR Cleaned, full service this week. All pipes checked.
Possible air leak relating to the seating of the air box lid, but I've done all i can to seal it.
Fault codes before the swap wew P0101 and P0110, I think :S Air mass Circuit and Air Temp sensor.
