I repaired mine - the constant clacking had fractured the mounting plate in the door, so I had to remove the door, extract the checkstrap and weld up the plate
While the checkstrap was off, I had a close look and sussed that the hinge at the A-pillar end had a bit of play in the pin.
The dental floss "fix" works by filling the tiny gap between the checkstrap and the a-pillar mounting plate - I figured that some well-targetted "adjustment" with a lump hammer would achieve broadly the same results. So, I put an old socket (about 13mm) on the hinge, rested the checkstrap on a lump hammer body and walloped the other side with another hammer
Result - almost zero clacking - probably a 90% improvement - nice to get a cheap fix, but I'm guessing I'll have to shell out on a new checkstrap eventually
