Error reading ECU on diagnostic, Alfa 156

Hi i have a 156 2.5 v6 sportwagon, i had an issue with the car under performing and also being very expensive on fuel consumption all of a sudden. The car also seems to be slightly missing. I took it to someone who has an Autoland Diagnostic kit, however when they connect to the car, they receive a message "Error in connecting to device". About 10 months ago i connected to the car using a different make diagnostic and there were no problems. Does anyone perhaps know if this is a sign of the ECU starting to pack up? Or perhaps just the specific diagnostic not picking up the car? I dont have all that much money to explore different solutions, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!
