grinding rear brakes!!!

Wife has just returned from work in our 156 - 1.8, looking like death warmed up.! Travelling down the motorway, applied the brakes and suddendly experienced a horrendous grinding noise from the rear. This continued every time the brakes were applied until it finally limped home. Is this a simple case of worn down brake pads or has anyone else experienced the same? Any reply would help me sleep better tonight before I take off the wheels in the morning and have a look.

Re: grinding rear brakes!!!

Either wornout pads, failed pads, or something trapped under pad.

Agree with David C.

If the pads are worn right through the material, then you could be running metal to metal. (pad backplate to disc)
You may need a new brake disc if it is scored badly.

Alfa prices for either are high, you may consider 'after market' (pattern) parts.

Re: grinding rear brakes!!!

These days, when the pads' life is finished, you may as well change the discs too anyway. I got a very good deal on new pads and discs all round from BuyPartsBy, 100 inc. for the whole lot. Lockheed discs and Mintex pads. Perfectly good unless you want to do track days or repeated heavy braking.
