Alfa 147 Gear change

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help, the with has told me her Alfa 147 is a 2002 plate.
It has a stiff gear stick movement and is hard to get into reverse, and can't change down 5th to 4th to3rd.
any help or advice would be much appreciated

There are several things it could be firstly the clutch . secondly the cables that operate the gear mechanism on the gear box could be fouling on something stopping them having proper travel or they have stretched and need replacing.
third could be a gearbox problem. It is possible that is the top hat bushes on the top of the gearbox that are worn and have too much movement but with the problem you describe it's unlikely its just this.
There is a possibility that there is a build up of swarf in the gearbox which can be aproblem but needs the end cover removing and cleaning out.
Has it just started or has it been getting worse over a period of time.
Sorry this is a bit vague but not being able to experience first hand makes it difficult.
