I think I'm a very lucky 156 JTD 1.9 16v owner....
Exactly four years since full cambelt kit and water pump change, and having only covered 37,600 miles in that time, I decided to get the 12,000 miles service and full cambelt and water pump change with Paul at AforAlfa in Aylesbury.
A week before my service a loud rattle began from the right side of the engine bay (as sitting behind the wheel), and I called the breakdown services to take a look and see what the problem was. Diagnosis - worn bearings in the aircon pump. No doubt about it they said....
So I drove to Aylesbury for the service and this is what Paul found:
1) New cambelt tensioner on left, old tensioner on right:
2) Cambelt looks slack here:
3) And here:
Apart from being very lucky, it's also disappointing that a JTD 16v cambelt tensioner has only lasted just over 37,000 miles before falling to bits. What with worries over the water pumps on these engines, it just goes to show that the running gear on the JTDs can be just as fragile as those found on the TS/JTS engines!
Now I know why specialists such as AforAlfa and Alfashop are recommending cambelt kit and water pump changes for these JTD multi-valve engines every 36,000 miles or three years, whichever occurs first.
And a big thanks again to Paul for sorting this out!
