Power steering pump died after belt change
Two days after changing the aux belt there is oil leeking from the power steering pump. Not from any of the connecting hoses so it must be the bearing shaft that failed under load from the new belt. I can't think of or see any other place where it could leak.
On hindsight, the belt did feel a bit tight when I put it on. Thats my theory anyway.
I am in the process of taking the old pump out but I'm stuck. Took the oil filler tank off and undid the hose and coupling the pump. I think I can get the belt pulley off with the 3 bolts at the front.
Problem is what looks like two bolts at the back of the pump facing the engine side. How on earth do I get at them? Impossible from the top as there is a plastic cover in the way. I have yet to get the car high enough on stands to get underneath. I also have a phobia about working under cars on stands. Just have to brace myself :-)
Also. Anyone have any experience with buying used pumps? They are available on Ebay for 30 - 40 quid and a new recon costs s over 500 Euros from Ricambi .
I would hate to have to do this job twice but the cost of the recon pump is a bit much for me just now.
