General Advice (I think!)


Have a 147 Selespeed, had it for abotu 2 years. It's only my second car (previously owned an old Corsa). Anyway, not used to all the servicing that I need to do.

I understand that a car needs servicing, no problem with that. But, im think I might be getting ripped off with what they say needs doing, and is there any benefit in going with an 'approved' dealers service dept.

Apparently, after my 3yr service (car has only done 21K miles), I need a cambelt change (£875), some rubber fixings replaced on the exhaust (£400 - 4 hrs labour apparently), new brake pads (£130) and a few other bits like replacing handbrake cable (£100). (all prices inc VAT).

If these things need doing no problem, but as I said above, any benefit in going with approved dealer?

Also, with cambelt change. If I get it done, and new cambelt goes and wrecks engine - do I have any comeback on anyone. (what if cambelt replace by an independent dealer/mechanic?)

as far as im aware the timing belt does not need to be replaced until 36000 miles or there about, unless of course they have looked at the car and spotted a problem, you could get the belt checked by an indipendant garage. seems odd to me but im no expert.

The cambelt should be replaced at three years OR 36k, whichever comes sooner, so yes that should be done.

An independent Alfa specialist could do it for you (almost certainly cheaper - £875 is extortionate - where are you in the country?) but your average all-makes-serviced garage doesn't have the required tools to change an Alfa 2.0TS cambelt.

The thing which sounds fishy to me is £400 for exhaust work. That's a new one on me.

There's little reason to believe a cambelt change, done by mechanics qualified to work on Alfas, could wreck the engine. Far more likely you'll wreck it by not getting it done at all.
