Still very confused

OK, I dropped the sump this morning and to be honest, not as bad a job as I imagined. Took the caps off and the news is not good. Two and three, the shells have turned on the crank, the shells are in pretty bad shape, picky to follow, one and four are not in bad order. I took the centre mains cap off and that was in reasonable order. The crank, given all that has happened, seems pretty good and I think I may be able to dress it. My question is, do you think, given the shells have moved, new shells will be OK.
What I cannot understand is that this car has just come back from France having done 2000 mainly motorway miles, it sounded OK, and got us home without missing a beat.
I found a fair amount of debris in the sump and in the oil strainer.
