156 1.8 ts lacking power and wierd noise

Hi Alfa guys.

Im having what i think is a bit of a problem.

I got an Alfa 156 1.8 ts from 2005 the facelifted model, and i really love the car.
But i have a couple of issues with it. It really feels like the car got a lot more power to give me but holds it back if u know what i mean.
I godt the famous diesel sound when starting the up the car wich i believe is the variator.
Up until 4500 rpm the car fells abit sluggish as if it has more to give when i then get to the 4500 rpm mark the car drops power and a wierd metal sounding noice is heard.
can this be the fault of a variator not working proberly ?

Think i have read every single post on lacking car etz. but i cant find anyone else with this problem with the metal noice, therefore i post a new one.

Hope that anyone got an idea on what to test or replace..

Thx for great forum

The metallic noise is worrying is it coming from the top or the bottom of the engine?
There is also a solonoid that controls the variator oil pressure on top of the engine.
If the noise is at the bottom it is possible the shell bearing are going that will cause similar symptoms to the ones you describe. you need to have a good listen.

The sound is from the top of the engine from the T-belt side.
Im going to change the variator next month together with t-belt and waterpump.
solonoid as been confirmed and its working fine.

The metal sound, is like a loose heat shield if u know what i mean ?

When was the belt changed? Did these problems start soon after the belt was last changed?

We have had similar issues before when the cam timing is not set correctly, when the variator starts to adjust the valve timing the valves then come into contact with the pistons hence the noise and lack of performance.

I have the same fault on my 156 TS.
When I have some spare money/time I will get a new belt and waterpump and adjust the cam timing.. From what I can read it should fix the issue.

When i bought it the belt was changed and the car actually did it when i got it.
but the belt been on for about 30k km now with an interval on 60k km as far as i remember ?

Ill change the T-belt and the variator (Becourse of the diesel sound) and then see if it helps on my problem.
Does any of you know where the 1.8 ts engine is prone to use the oil ? I mean is it like the valve seals or is it like piston rings or maybe another place ?

Im using alot of oil and if its the valve seals that is the reason for this then im thinking about changing them to ?

Alfa 166

Piston rings are thin with no oil channels which is why they burn oil.
