I'm a little embarresed, and quite puzzled??
Hi All, I am helping a young chap with a 2001 156 Selespeed and am not quite sure which is the most likely culprit to our problem.
Now the Selespeed itself is fine, (shock - the dealership incorrectly said it was the actuator - $3500 please)
The Thermostat is stuck open, (new one already ordered) hence it takes forever to get to 90', Now as we are driving around waiting for it to get to operating temp it drives perfect, we start & stop in peak hour traffic 20 times, no worries.
BUT, as son as it gets to operating Temp, the first time we stop at lights it stops, idles fine, but when you put your foot down to move off . . . . .NOTHING! It is idling fine, in first gear, but it is as if the accelerator pedal is no longer connected in our universe???
If you turn engine off & then restart everything is fine and away you go, and the issue does not happen again that drive. But if you go for drive again after engine cools down he scenario repeats itself.
It shouldn't be the crank sensor, even though its an engine heating up issue, because it would stall & then turn over & not start!
When we connect MES we get 2 errors.
1/ Faulty Variator
2/ Faulty Engine ECU - ECU lost connection.
The Variator comes up every second or third time, but the ECU failure is constant. The Variator itself is very quiet, and as soon as you hit 3000 it starts to really pull, and I think this error is a spurious one cause by what ever our culprit fault is.
Now - Engine ECU - they are USUALLY pretty indestructible, and the few I have had to replace are due to owners fiddling with them (WHY? I ASK YOU) so I don't think (hope) its the actual ECU. Have checked all the earths in the Engine Bay EXCEPT I forgot about the one under the ECU on the back of the head. That's next!
When I first connected MES there were some transient errors, engine speed sensor & two other minors, but all cleared & never returned.
As nothing happens till the engine warms up I find it hard to believe it IS the ECU.
Your thoughts on the issue would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping there is someone out there that will go "Ohh Yeah, had the same happened to me, its the . . . . ."
Well, I CAN dream cant I ?
AND PLEASE UNDERSTAND, THIS IS A ENGINE/ELECTRONIC MANAGMENT ISSUE !!! NOT SELESPEED !!
