Stiff gear stick

The other day I started to notice my gear stick stiffening up and today it has got even worse , now when I drop out of gear the stick just stays where it is instead of shooting back to the centre , and also ive notice third isnt where it should be i have to push slightly to the right and up to get it.

Could anyone offer an explaination please

Re: Stiff gear stick

There are loads of posts (as well as solutions) on this already. Search for "gearbox" or "gear stick" and you'll get quite a few threads. The gist of the answer seems to be that the selector plate can corrode or get worn out over time / poor weather conditions. You can replace it, along with the plastic bushes, or take out the plate, clean it and put it back in. A specialist will probably clean it for you for less than £100. Alternatively, it could something to do with the linkage, but either ways its not a particular expensive fix. Apparently, all of this is a well known wear problem.
