I bought myself a '00 156 2.0 TS two days ago.
Last night the ABS Light came on, i started the car twice and it disappeared for the rest of the evening.
This morning the ABS light, handbrake, battery and the seatbelt light came on.
Also the electric windows, headlights and speedo doesnt work.
I have started the car about 30 times, the only change was that the Electric windows and headlights started working.
If the car reaches about 2200 RPM the battery light turns off.
Any idea what the problem could be? Faulty generator, maybe just a broken wire? I looked under the hood, but I didnt see any issues and I dont really know what to look for.
I have searched the web abit and alot of people seem to have issues with the alternator, but can it give this many issues?
Thank you in advance.
For me, I'd give the battery a damn good charge, and try it again. If it cures it then either your battery or alternator are faulty. If the problem comes back overnight, it's probably your battery, if however it comes back after a drive, it is probably the alternator.
Another way to test, if you have a voltmeter is check the battery voltage, with everything off, it should be over 12v. Then start the car and it at a fast idle (say 2000rpm) it should be well over 13v and should definitely have increased.
Worth noting, that it is not uncommon for a dying alternator to kill the battery, because it is deep cycling it too much etc. So it could well be both.
There is a know problem with corrosion on one of the contacts\fuses for the electric windows, which can cause them to stop workinng, and this starts to manifest itself first when the voltages are low, i.e. battery is on way out, so that does fit with things.
