It's Alive !!!
Well the head was off, the valves changed (all of them), the cylinder head gasket replaced, all the valve oil seals replaced, the grankcase was off and the big end bearings and shells changed (why do half a job), new water pump, tensioner, idler, timing belt, new camshaft timing sensor (no point in not doing it is there), everything assembled with PTFE oil because I like the idea that it makes things run smoother but don't have any real proof.
I was expecting a fibre cylinder head gasket, but when it arrived it was thin steel. anyway it does the job.
First turn of the key and the engine roared to life ... woohooo !!!
I didn't get the head skimmed, because I couldn't see any distortion on it when I had removed the old gasket material using a few scouring pads and gasket remover spray.
Anyway, a couple of things still to do, I managed to lose an injector O ring when I took off the fuel injection rail... these are available from "The Injector Specialist" on Ebay who charges £5 for a pack of 8... not available from halfrauds and besides for a fiver why look elsewhere.
I've got some jubilee clips to put back on the inlet manifold hoses and various bits of trim to put back on the engine, and then it's back on the road.
Thankyou to all the people who advised me.
