Alfa Romeo 156 shows Neutral on gear shift but stuck in gear
Hi to All,
I am looking for help to solve following problem with my 2005 Alfa Romeo 156 JTS Selespeed.
I was driving my car for wheel alignment to a local Bridgestone service centre but missed a turn by a bit. It was not a busy road so I decided to reverse and drive backwards, but gear would just stay in neutral. I tried to go forward but would not switch to first ever. After several failed attempts I turn off engine and switched on emergency lights on.
Bystanders pushed me in the car backwards to the closest parking spot. I went out of the car to call RAA assistance and notice that my right rear tyre was flat as well (what a luck? Or is it?).
RAA tech diagnose car but found no errors and moreover car does not have any warring indicators as well. We changed the punched tyre and order tow truck.
Tow truck driver tried to load my car but was not able to move it. When he notice that even so gear selector shows Neutral car is actually in the gear (it was strange as before car was pushed with no problem). Plus when he starts the engine car will jump and stall.
After trials and errors he figured out that if we start the car and press on accelerator pedal hard car would not stall and allow engine just idle. While car was idling it became possible to move the car on to the tow truck.
He drop car at local Alfa Romeo dealer BELCAR for repair. They check the car and told me that they are not 100% sure but suspect it is problem with transmission and it will cost me over $4000 to fix which is ridicules including ‘not 100% sure...” part.
I looked through various Alfa Romeo forums and even so did not find exactly same description I am pretty sure now that it is something to do with electronics, faulty contact etc.
Is where anything I can do to fix the problem not including pulling apart transmission of the car?
I am quite handy and have general knowledge of electronics etc.
