2001 156 Selespeed 56000miles with Transmission Problem
I am new to the forum but I am being driven to despair over my Alfa 156 Selespeed (2001 56,000miles). Up until about 3 weeks ago, it has been fantastic, without fault a joy; and now about 3 garage visits later, it is still in the same situation described below.
After car has been driven for a while and the engine is warm, slowing down will start the gears randomly selecting (any gear between 2 and 5), even neutral. When is at its worst, even at a standstill it will select gear 3, then 2 and then 1. The display continually flashes and there is no selespeed gearbox error logged or shown on the dash. When driving away in gear 2, gear 4 will often then select but engine is clearly from sound still in gear 2 trying to change and then lags and revs erratically, last time I drove it I had just come from a long 144 mile drive cruising in gear 5, first junction the car while pulling away, selected Neutral. PLEASE NOTE, this symptom does NOT occur when the engine is cold.
When the car is stationary, it is difficult to select neutral and the gears are literally choosing themselves. If its possible, getting back to higher speeds and into gear 5, the car will be OK until the next decrease in speed.
WHATS BEEN DONE
1. Selespeed fluid topped up
2. All electrical connectors to selespeed gearbox checked and replaced where necessary
3. Selespeed Actuator replaced
After my local garage replaced the selespeed actuator which I expected to cost over £1200, the problem was still there and he has kindly decided not to charge me for the part, nor the labour he has undertaken to do the work, instead - he has refitted the old one back as there is no fault with it.
As he is incurring costs for parts and lost work on other cars now, he will not (understandabley) try anything else without me getting a second opinion.
I dont trust the Alfa dealerships in the area and I am also reluctant to drive the car any further than 5 miles as the car vitually becomes undrivable.
DOES ANYBODY ON THE FORUM HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE OF THIS PROBLEM OR KNOW OF A SOLUTION?
Many thanks in advance.
