156 2.4 Sportwagon cutting out problem?
Towed my caravan with my 156 2.4 JTD this weekend for the first time. It's a very light 13 ft van than you can easily move by hand. Towed about 50 miles on Friday evening (including being held up at Postwick with start stop traffic for about half an hour, used the car solo Friday night, and Saturday and no problems up to this point. Was on the A47 in lane one when I caught up a slow car and went to overtake (can't remember if I changed down), but engine management light came on and engine cut out. Fortunately was able to coast down into a layby. Tried to restart to no avail. but after having left it for about 10mins it started again. Carried on and almost made it to the Easton roundabout - about 5 miles I guess and it cut out again. Waited another 10 mins or so and it started, so I pulled into a layby and a friend came and towed the caravan home for me (around ten miles). Drove the car home without a problem.
I've had something similar happen a couple of times driving solo, where forgetting I was driving a diesel, have tried to accelerate in a too higher gear, or have accelerated hard in a low gear, but on each occasion the engine has fired up instantly.
Is it a coincidence that the car was fine when solo, or is the extra drag causing a problem - I've driven thousands of trouble free miles in the car - so why now?
I'd appreciate any suggestions.
